How many people do you need to play werewolf?
Whowolf starts from 3 players, so you can try out how everything works. It gets really exciting from 5, and up to 20 players fit in one room. About one in four is a werewolf.
Can you play werewolf with 5 people?
Yes. With 5 people one werewolf plays against four others. In the Classic level those include the seer, the witch and the hunter. Rounds are short and good for starting out.
Can you play werewolf without a narrator?
Yes, that is exactly what Whowolf is for. The app is the narrator: it deals the roles, calls the night, counts the votes and keeps to the rules. So everyone plays, and nobody has to be the game master.
Is Whowolf free?
Yes. Whowolf is free, with no ads and no in-app purchases. It is open source under the Apache License 2.0.
Do I need an account?
No. You only type a name for the round. There is no sign-up, no account and no tracking.
Does everyone need the app?
No. One person needs the app to open the room. Everyone else can also play in the browser by scanning the QR code.
Does Whowolf work on the iPhone?
Yes, in the browser with Safari, without installing anything. If you want the app, install it through AltStore or SideStore. Whowolf is not on the App Store yet.
Can you play werewolf online?
Whowolf is made for people sitting together. Anyone not on the same Wi-Fi can join through our server, for example on mobile data. It is not meant for groups who cannot see each other: werewolf lives on looking at each other.
What happens to our data?
The game runs on the host’s phone and stays at the table. Every connection is end-to-end encrypted, also through the server, which only passes on what it cannot read. More in the Safety chapter.
Can someone join later?
Yes, by day. The host lets the newcomer in, as a ghost or as a villager depending on the settings. Once the room is locked, nobody new can join.
Which roles are there?
Villager, werewolf, seer, witch, hunter and cupid. On top of that the village can elect a mayor whose vote counts twice.
How long does a round take?
That depends on the number of players and the times you set. Every phase has a clock so the game keeps moving. Small rounds are over sooner, big ones take longer.
